Senior Citizens Group

Greetings members,

With our membership standing at 449 at the beginning of 2009, TTDI Wargamas has come quite a long way. To all our members, thank you for the keen participation and support.

Lending extra thrill, TTDI Wargamas has its own theme song, complete with lyrics, sung to the popular tune of 'Seasons in the Sun' each time we embark on a trip.

Coming to the programme of activities for 2009, travel broadens the mind, so there are both domestic and international tours, bearing in mind also to think 'green' towards eco-tourism. To avoid undue stress on ourselves, not to mention our wallets, we are timing our travel during shoulder season, just before or after high season. Cuti-cuti Malaysia will include places of interest in States which we have yet to visit, i.e. Kedah/Perlis, Perak, Melaka, Taman Negara, Mulu Caves to name a few. Factory visits are a must and for members who missed out some like previous trips to Gardenia, Hi-5 Bakeries, these will be included again.

Whether its just for relaxation or culture, there will be opportunity to indulge our senses with fine music, arts & drama, concert, movie as and when the occasion arises. 'Charity' in December will present the chance to do something good.

Finally, we hope there's something for everyone in the new programme presented below. Of course, we still welcome you to drop us a line anytime on anything that is of interest.

Here, your leading team, the Committee wishes our Christian members a Merry Christmas and all members with their families, a very Happy New Year 2009.

ANN CHEE
(Group Leader, TTDI RA WargaMas) .

WargaMas Donations to Charity Homes 2009
Date: 22 December 2009.

As the grand finale to its activities for the year, WargaMas TTDI RA presented various gift items, contributed generously by its  members, to two charity organizations, namely “Little Sisters of the Poor” located in Cheras and “The Stepping Stones Living Centre” in Taman Seputeh.

Datuk Abdul Latif Mohd Som, Chairman of TTDI Residents' Association was on hand  to do the honours for the presentation together with WargaMas Group Leader Mrs. Ann Chee as well as two members, Mdm. Loh Yoon Heng & Mrs. Carol Mah.

The gifts items were specially selected to suit the needs and requirements of the residents of the two homes. “Little Sisters of the Poor” which cater solely to the elderly poor needed mainly toiletries, toweling, adult pampers and laundry detergents. On the other hand, “The Stepping Stones Living Centre” being primarily a home for orphans and abandoned children received foodstuffs, books as well as dental care products, so necessary for their daily needs. Members had been advised accordingly to contribute in kind. However there was one donor who gave very generously in cash by way of a cheque for each home.

This charity drive was the second undertaken by the WargaMas TTDIRA since its inception six years ago and this presentation to the Homes brought to an end the year's programme for WargaMas. Our thanks and appreciation are duly recorded to all who have taken part."

Lookout Point Trip
Date: 21 st Nov 2009

At 10:30 am, our bus started to pull out from the TTDI Community Centre heading for our destination for today. The traffic in KL was unusually easy today, so before we could really warm up the seat, we were already at the first stop of the trip, The Corus Hotel, for “Food” to fill up our rumbling stomach. So for the next two and a half hours, nothing else but food, and lots of exchange of news and happenings were on the itinerary.

The next stop was the KLCC and another two and a half hours of walking, window shopping and shopping to help burn out the extra calories just loaded in, a real great idea. The ladies really enjoyed the shopping and were happy in the belief that they had done their part contributing to our PM’s economic boost strategy to take us out of the crisis.

Time flies while one is enjoying, and at 5:00 pm, we boarded the bus again with smiling faces and headed towards the ultimate target of the day – The Look Out Point at Ampang.

The traffic along Jalan Ampang is really killing, with countless traffic junctions coupled with the ever heavier rain. At last, after about 45minutes of the wet journey, we finally saw in front of us the signboard “Look Out Point” !

Disembarking from the bus, we were told to walk up the steep tarmac for 10 minutes in the rain. Nevertheless, the immediate disappointment followed, we were not able to witness the much awaited night view of the city which is supposed to be the highlight of the entire trip. However, as if to console us, the rain has brought the Genting Highland mist to Ampang. With the breeze blowing from left to right and add in some imaginations, one can led to believe we have reached China’s “Hwang San” – The yellow Mountain.

OK, 6:00 pm, its dinner time. Well the food was quite ordinary. After some hot drinks and food that warmed up our body, we ventured out to the edge of the slope as the rain had stopped and can’t believe what’s in-front of our eyes. The sky was clear and right beneath the horizon were the Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower plus thousands of sparkling lights of the entire KL and Ampang city! What a breathtaking view!

Gazing with the gently chilly wind brushing across my face together with the snowy drizzle coming down, I was totally at a loss for words to describe the nightscape beauty. Who is the smart fellow to discover such a place out of nowhere, this question must have popped up in many of our minds?!

Last but not least, a big thank you to the fantastic organizing committee for a job well done in organizing such an unforgettable trip.

RAUB OUTING
Date: 1 August 2009

As usual the coach left the Community Centre at 7.30am with a group of excited Wargamas folks.

The first stop was in Raub town where we flocked to the famous Ratha curry fish head shop  where orders were placed for the delicious dish to be collected on our return trip to KL.

Then we headed for the Organic Farm where we were given an interesting tour and a taste of nasi lemak cooked with ‘virgin coconut oil’ rather than the traditional coconut milk. There were organically grown vegetables to sample and for sale as well.

After this, the much-awaited durian-for-lunch began. There were also mangosteen and rambutan for everyone to sample. Those items on sale were promptly snapped up. Visits were then made to a tofu and a groundnuts factory.  We left the two places with bags of items that were on sale.

Next we were ferried to a conducted tour of another organic orchard farm. Finally, it was time to go home, but not without stopping in Raub for an early dinner of freshly plucked organic vegetables, river fish and other delectable dishes. It was an exhilarating outing with everybody happy, well-fed and satisfied with their purchases!

3D2N TAMAN NEGARA ADVENTURE TRAIL
Date: 14-16 June 2009

Twenty eight wargamas members departed on Sunday, 14 June for Taman Negara, Pahang – Malaysia’s premier national park.

Fun began right from the first day with 4-seater boat cruises along Sg. Tahan to Lata Berkoh. Fishes like kelisa, kelah and patin abound in the rivers flowing through the forest park, thus there was a stop at the Lubuk Tenor Kelah Sanctuary to feed the fishes.

By nightfall, it was the jungle walk. There were amazing discoveries under the torch and head lights. The guides pointed out the night insects or animals like the slow loris, stick mantis, black scorpion and other interesting finds.

Day 2 started off with the jungle trekking up Bukit Teresik. After heavy rain the night before, the ground was a little bit muddy but nothing that wargamas could not handle - warning each other of fallen trees or branches, slippery paths, broken boardwalks, overhanging bamboos with spikes, etc. True to the saying, never too old to learn, the diverse plant shrubs and huge tall tree species have invaluable usage and herbal properties. Knock three times the huge butteress roots of a tualang tree and the sound echoed to mean, "please help me" when one’s lost in the forest.

The world’s longest canopy walk above the Tualang trees – about 8 storeys high off the ground - on shaky swaying tree-top bridges, was not for the faint- hearted but no wargamas turned back. By noon, lunch on the floating restaurant was no disappointment, especially the patin fish that was cooked and served, fresh and tasty.

Final highlight of the trip was shooting the rapids along Sg. Tembeling, with 3 boats racing each other and getting everyone soaking wet to the skin.

After that, there was time to visit an orang asli village of the Badek tribe, and understanding their nomadic lifestyle, how they hunt and start the fire. The evening ended with a barbecue under the stars and karaoke session .

On the return journey the third day, there was time to drop by at the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre where they strived to look after orphaned elephants, training them for translocation and ensuring their continued survival. Visitors could feed them, bathe and ride on the elephants.
